Worried that your loved one will be safe swimming in a mermaid fin? How about taking a big first step towards becoming a swimming mermaid performer? In this two hour class you and/or your child will learn about the basics of mermaid swimming and freediving (apnea diving) with an on deck learning class followed by an in-water pool session with a max depth of 10ft. This course includes a background in mermaid stories and lore, how to choose and put on a rental mermaid tail or fin, stretches, self rescue skills, an overview of underwater makeup, the basics of safe breath hold techniques, weighting for buoyancy, surface diving, how to enter and exit the water, how to float, and then have a bit of time to take photos. After successful completion of this class you and/or your child will receive a PADI Basic Mermaid card in the mail. AGES / ABILITIES: Children must be at least 6 years of age (recommended age 8+), at least 48" tall, and be able to float for 3 minutes, swim independently for at least 25m, and be fully comfortable putting their face in the water and swimming underwater without goggles. It is recommended that any children attending have already passed their Red Cross Learn to Swim Level 3 Standard (or YMCA Swim Lesson Level 4) before signing up. The max depth in this class is 10 ft. Please be sure that if you are enrolling a child that they are comfortable swimming in deep water. WHAT TO BRING: Towels, a SECURE swimsuit, snorkel, mask, swim fins (also called bifins, long fins are ok for adults), sandals, sunblock, drinking water, and a change of clothing. A rental mermaid fin is provided during class or you can bring your own if you have one of the following brand tails: Mermaid Linden, Suntails, Mertailor Whimsy, FinFin, or Cape Cali. Mermaid Linden is highly recommended for beginners. REQUIRED PAPERWORK: A liability release form, the mermaiding practices statement of understanding, and also a diver medical form. These need to be printed, filled out, and brought with you to class. STUDENT : INSTRUCTOR RATIOS 1:1 for Ages 6-8 2:1 for Ages 8-10 4:1 for Ages 10-Adult You are welcome to ask us to add on additional students to your class as long as we maintain the above staffing ratios.
